"New York City"
I have wandered into the unknown
On my own with nothing but a backpack
Only to find that I have grown
More confused as to where I'm at
I have been out into the real world
It is indeed quite a scary place
And now I have returned
Encapsulated in my tiny cave
Sidewalks are conveyer belts
Filled with backstabbers and sharks
Looking to pickpocket the unaware
In the early hours of the dark
I have been to clubs and bars
Many times I've had sex
I've slept in broken down cars
Many faces I'd like to forget
I've seen a mother abuse her child
And husbands hit their wives
I've seen girls running wild
Selling themselves to perverted guys
I have been in hospital rooms
Crying in the cold at night
Much liquor I've consumed
Thankfully I avoided fights
I lost my father at the age of ten
But not before I inherited his disease
Everyday I wonder when
God will end it all, maybe, please?
Crowded streets and polluted air
Envelop corners everywhere
Bodies close from hair to hair
Bump each other without care
I have loved and lost and love again
I have lost so many old time friends
People move on and scatter like bats
I hope they are less confused as to where they're at
I've seen countless marriages fail
I hope that doesn't happen to me
With the wind beneath my sail
I try to react positively
I've seen the poor in streets
Stricken with poverty and hunger
I've heard the shouts and beeps
Of traffic jams grow somber
I've seen huge towers collapse
And chaos form full bloom
I've witnessed this city's relapse
Intoxicating me like perfume
I've seen a friend get run over
By a car not once but twice in a row
I've tried wishing on those clovers
But this firefly has lost its glow
I have destroyed myself many times
Only to find myself intertwined
With the relentless madness that goes on
Exchanging handshakes with falling bombs
So every night I light a smoke
And watch the bills pile up
Owning a house is certainly no joke
I'm stuck in a middle class rut
And I'm not expecting any pity
Or a medal from what I've seen
I'm just surviving life in New York City
And turning reality into dreams

You tell poems quite well..
They 'say' that 'mankind' has 'evolved' ....
NOT sure that THIS OLD geezer would AGREE with that statement .... ~SIGH~
SOME 'see' with their EYES ....
SOME 'see' with their HEARTS ....
SOME 'see' with BOTH ....
May YOU be a "BOTH" .... SMILES ....
My BEST to you and yours, KIND SOUL .... LRW.
